Canoeists will discover an abundance of routes offering diverse canoeing routes, terrain and wildlife viewing opportunities. The chances for finding a quiet route to truly experience nature are excellent.

MISSISSIPPI RIVER TRAILS

The Mississippi Headwaters River Trail is 420 miles in length and meanders through the most scenic and remote of the Mississippi River’s 2,348 miles. The route’s attraction between Iron Bridge Landing and Lake Bemidji is a dense wetland forest. Approaching Bemidji, the river’s banks become more defined and farms and homes become visible. The coniferous and deciduous forests are home to 242 kinds of birds, 23 species of reptiles and amphibians and 57 speciesof mammals. Also see Parks & Refuges for more information.

BOY RIVER CANOE TOUR NEAR WALKER

The route flows from Ten Mile Lake through lowland conifer, upland hardwood and sedge meadow forest types. It ends at Boy Bay on beautiful Leech Lake in Walker. The route has lake-like characteristics and follows the historic path of Indian tribes for food source (wild rice) and travel. Campsites are located along route. You can see a variety of bird species and wildlife including eagles.

CHIPPEWA NATIONAL FOREST WATERS

The Chippewa provides access to 700 lakes throughout the forest. There are also 920 miles of rivers and streams for fishing, boating and canoeing.

CROW WING CHAIN OF LAKES

State designated canoe route. Considered one of Minnesota’s best family canoe routes, the Crow Wing River flows 90 miles from the chain of 11 lakes in Hubbard County to its union with the Mississippi River at Crow Wing State Park. The route is popular with beginners and offers a sandy bottom, lush forest and marshes to observe.
