The areas forests, lakes and trails are a
haven for snowmobilers. Trails take riders deep into the many pristine
winter woodlands and across frozen lakes. A local Detroit Lakes resident
is credited with building one of the first snowmobiles in 1913, using
an airplane engine and propeller.
DETROIT LAKES
The Winter Wonderland Trail System
has more than 250 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. It interconnects
with such trail systems as the Itasca State Park groomed snowmobile
trails.
PARK RAPIDS
Several hundred miles of groomed
and inter-connected trails traverse the area, including Two
Inlets State Forest, Paul Bunyan State Forest with 50-miles of groomed
snowmobile trails and 10-15 miles of ungroomed snowmobile trails,
Itasca State Park and the alternate trail alongside the Heartland
Trail, 27-mile paved grant-in-aid trail.
WALKER
Several hundred miles of trails come together along
the Paul Bunyan and Heartland alternate trails, as
well as within the Chippewa.
