The north country past is preserved in many area historical centers and museums throughout the Byway region. The contents and artifacts vary from pioneer history to Native American culture, arts to wildlife.

• Anishinabe Cultural Center

Displays works of 50 artists from Anishinabe and other tribal cultures. Enjoy dancing demonstrations, storytelling, Anishinabe myths and legends. Gather and parch wild rice.

• Becker County Historical Museum

Preserves history of the settlers of the Detroit Lakes area.

• Hubbard County Historical Museum

Displays features of pioneer life in Hubbard County. It contains memorabilia from several wars and early 1900s equipment. Tour a reconstructed one-room school and one-room pioneer farm house. Exhibits include pioneer cabin, war room, office, clothing store, etc.

• North Country Museum of Arts

One of the finest collections of Renaissance paintings in MN, outside of the Twin Cities. The Museum also displays African art, Native American portraits and contemporary works.

• Cass County Historical Museum & Pioneer School

Three museums with one admission. The Cass County Historical Museum & Pioneer School houses exhibits on county logging and homesteading history, along with a historic schoolhouse. The Walker Wildlife & Indian Art Museum houses a replica of American Indian life in the late 1800s, native animals and a special collection of butterflies and eagles.

• MN Fishing Hall of Fame

Minnesota’s most unique collection of sport fishing information, exhibits, memorabilia, fishing videos, trophy fish and more. Special focus on fishing education for kids.

• Red River Museum, Akeley

Established in 1994, the Red River Museum is based upon the book, “Red River: Paul Bunyan’s Own Lumber Company and Its Railroads”, a look into T.B. Walker’s fabulous lumber empire. Open seasonal.

• Paul Bunyan Historical Museum

Located in Akeley. look at the town’s history, including the logging days.
